The Market Garden of England

The Fleece is proud to be part of the growing number of food outlets which have registered with TEVs 30:30 Scheme, which supports those eateries which procure and sell at least 30% of their food from within a 30 mile radius of Evesham.

Thanks to the rich alluvial soil and favourable climate Bretforton & the  Vale of Evesham has ideal conditions for fruit and vegetable growing.

Generations of market gardeners once worked the land using traditional hand tools and horse-drawn carts, supplying fresh produce to local markets and major cities across the country. Seasonal harvests, especially the famous Evesham asparagus (“gras”) and plums became a key part of the region’s identity and are still celebrated through annual events and festivals.

While large-scale market gardening has declined, the heritage lives on  and many large national food growing companies are based around Evesham, including our suppliers at Holdsworth.
